Capturing the Winning Shot: Tips and Suggestions

Social Services Network’s Intergenerational Photography Contest is for the BEST photograph taken by a younger or older person of younger and older people together.

Here are some tips and suggestions to help you win the contest.

1. Make Sure Your Photo is Clearly Intergenerational
This means that the older and younger people are featured prominently in the photograph. Although there are no age requirements for the subjects of the photograph, a person not familiar with the subjects should easily be able to determine that they are younger and older people.

2. Check Photo Quality
You don't have to be a great photographer to win the contest. Make sure your photograph is not blurry, not too dark, the subjects are centered, you can clearly see what they are doing, and the background is not too distracting. Remember, the subject of the photo is the intergenerational relationship, not the tree in the background.

3. Tell the Story
Do explain what is going on in the picture or who the subjects are. The deciding factor of the winner would be the powerful story behind the picture.

4. Consider Candid and Planned Shots
Keep your camera on hand for those memorable candid shots, but also consider preparing a shot with props, costumes, or a backdrop. Think color, composition, and creativity when arranging your setting.

5. Get Inspired
Take time to observe and reflect on the intergenerational relationships around you.

6. Enhance Your Picture
Use a computer to crop, lighten, and enhance your digital or scanned pictures. Consider turning a color photograph into a black and white image for added glamour.

7. Celebrate and Keep Taking Pictures!
The goal of the contest is to celebrate intergenerational relationships and the important role older and younger people play in each other lives and in our communities. If you happen to get a great picture in the process…well that is just an added bonus!
