2002

  • UWYR conducted a Leading Ethnoracial Access Dialogue (LEAD) survey.

2003

  • UWYR approved Community Initiative Grant for 3 years under a sponsorship agreement with Catholic Community Services of York Region (CCSYR).

2004

  • Appointment of first Chairperson.
  • Established office at Centre for Information & Community Services (CICS), Markville Branch.
  • Hired part-time staff.
  • Replaced part-time staff with full-time Program Director in November.
  • Official launch of Social Services Network.

2005

  • Established relationships with mainstream service providers to deliver 26 presentations to 1600 members of the diverse South Asian community in the Region
  • Member of HSPC Action plan
  • Held first Annual South Asian Day in Markham- May 14, 2005.
  • Declaration of South Asian Heritage Day in Markham.
  • Responded to Victims of the Tsunami & Asian earthquake.
  • Delivered cultural sensitivity training for 200 staff of various agencies.

2006

  • Applied/Received joint funding & program partnership with Family Services of York Region.
  • Established additional shared office space at Simpressions (Jobskills)
  • Received Charitable Status effective 2005
  • Officially recognized as a United Way of York Region Agency
  • Prepared first Strategic Plan and organization structure

2007

  • Increased funding level 12 times
  • Hosted First South Asian Health Fair
  • Held First South Asian Awards Ceremony to recognize the contribution of South Asians to the Canadian Community in 6 categories
  • Appointed first Executive Director and increased staff number to 10 including two Program Managers, Outreach Service Administrator and Team Leaders.
