In 2011 (the medium term), Canada’s total population is projected to be about 35.4 million, 5 million (14.1%) of whom will be 65 and over. Almost 16% of all women will be over 65, and of these, more than 32% will be over 80. The corresponding figures among men will be slightly more than 12% and more than 22%. – Statistics Canada. Majority of York Region Seniors (73%) live in Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan.

SSN is committed to improving South Asian senior’s quality of life, educating seniors, their families, caregivers, and colleagues about programs and services that are available through culturally and linguistically appropriate services. The South Asian Seniors Coalition of York Region (SASCYR) began in January 2008 under the umbrella of SSN and in partnership with Multicultural Council of Ontario Seniors SASCYR was officially launched on May 24, 2008 and a cultural show was organized by the seniors to celebrate the South Asian Heritage Day celebration.

Programs are delivered in English, Urdu, Tamil, Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi, and include:

  • Increase community awareness of issues related to healthy family relationships and, in particular, the impact on seniors
  • To increase community awareness of elder abuse
  • To reduce the isolation of abused victims, especially among newcomers, and increase the awareness of their rights and available supports
  • To decrease the incidence of elder abuse among the South Asian population in York Region by educating the community; provide support and counselling services for both victims and abusers; Set supporting system to stop the cycle of abuse.
